No Entryway? Create One in a Weekend

Many apartments open straight from the front door into the living room — no foyer, no coat closet, nowhere for keys to land. But you can build a convincing entryway in a single weekend with freestanding pieces.

Start with a narrow console table or a low bookshelf just inside the door: that’s your landing strip. Add wall hooks (adhesive or over-door) for coats and bags, a small tray or bowl for keys, and a rug to mark the zone. A mirror above the table bounces light and gives you a last look on the way out.

If you have the floor space, a tall open shelving unit perpendicular to the wall creates an actual sense of arrival — and hides the living room from the doorway. No drilling, no landlord negotiations, and it all moves with you.
